In Memoriam

It is with great sadness that we are sharing with you the peaceful passing of our beloved friend and colleague, Dr. Phu Tran, Associate Professor of Physics. Dr. Tran taught Physics at Norco College since 2005. He was an admired colleague and respected department chair. He was a strong advocate of students pursuing STEM careers.

After a 16 month hard fought battle against metastatic gastric cancer employing all possible treatments, he was finally overcome by the disease, passing the evening of September 30, 2019 at home surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Cassandra Sung, his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed as he leaves an irreplaceable void in our department.

Memorial for Dr. Phu Tran

Norco College invites you to join us for the memorial service in loving memory of Dr. Phu Tran, Associate Professor of Physics at Norco College from 2005-2019, on October 29, 2019, in the Center for Student Success, Room 217, from 12:50pm to 1:50pm.

Dr. Tran was a kind human being and dedicated professor who will be sorely missed.  If you had the good fortune of knowing Dr. Tran, kindly share your favorite memory at the services.

 

The Norco College faculty would like to honor Phu Tran’s lifelong legacy by establishing a scholarship in his name. In order to accomplish this, we need to raise $5,000 as a baseline. Our hope is to reach this mark and provide a yearly $1,000 scholarship to a Norco College qualified student in the STEM field.

If you are interested in contributing, please make your check payable to the RCCD Foundation and add Phu Tran Memorial STEM Scholarship on the memo. We will be collecting donations in the form of a check at the memorial service or checks can be mailed directly to:

Phu Tran Memorial STEM Scholarship

The Norco College faculty and administration along with the Tran Family established this scholarship to honor Dr. Phu Tran, who served the college as Associate Professor of Physics from 2005-2019. This scholarship is awarded to Norco College students majoring in either Physics or Engineering, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

Basic requirements and reviewer notes:
Major: Physics or Engineering
Cumulative GPA required: 3.0
Financial need required: No
Student activities, volunteer work required: None required
Other special requirements: Applicant must have completed at least 2 courses in either the PHY-4 series (PHY-4A, 4B, 4C) and/or MAT-1 series (MAT-1A, 1B, 1C) with a minimum GPA of 3.0
