The Assessment process is an important step to help identify the right placements and assist in making informed choices to achieve your educational goals. With the newly enacted AB 705 Bill, Norco College has implemented a new placement process designed to maximize the opportunity for students to begin with transfer-level coursework for English and math.

Placement tests for English and Math are no longer used at California Community Colleges. Instead, students answer questions based on high school information to receive English and Math placements. This information is collected in the admissions application, the placement survey in MyPortal or a simple Google survey that is sent to students after completing the admissions application.

  • Placement results can be located in MyPortal by going to the navigation menu on the left-side then clicking on Academics > Testing> Placement Scores Summary.
  • If you don't see any English or Math placements on the Placement Scores Summary page, you should complete the short Placement Survey under Academics > Testing in the navigation menu. Go to MyPortal

  • For the English as a Second Language (ESL) Guided Self-Placement survey, you can visit (ESL) Guided Self-Placement survey

Students are highly encouraged to meet with an Educational Advisor or a Counselor to better understand placement results.

To find out which English as A Second Language (ESL) class to start with, visit RCCD Guided Self-Placement Tool to take the ESL GSP. You will receive an ESL placement.

Click here for further information about ESL.

High school concurrent and dual enrollment students, (9 - 11 grade for math) (10 - 11 grade for English), who plan on enrolling into an English and/or math course before completing high school, may submit their most recent HS transcript (showing the cumulative GPA) and meet with a Norco College counselor to determine eligibility.

Per AB 705, students have the right to complete our locally developed Guided Self-Placement process for English, math and English as a Second Language (ESL). This process can guide you in receiving a higher placement.

  • For English Guided Self-Placement, students who do not place into ENG-1A directly may opt-out of ENG-91 by completing a simple form. You can opt out of this requirement with a simple form that is automatically approved. The form should take 2 - 3 minutes to complete. click here for further information.

  • For math Guided Self-Placement, students must visit with a counselor (schedule online counseling appointment) to discuss appropriate placement. In certain circumstances, some students will be referred to the Math Department Chair for further assistance in self-placement.

  • For English as a Second Language (ESL) Guided Self-Placement, students who feel they would benefit from English language instruction may visit RCCD Guided Self-Placement Tool to take the ESL GSP.
