At its August 2 Board meeting, the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees rescinded the requirement to provide proof of a COVID-19 vaccination for on-campus class attendance and onsite student services.

As of August 1, California ranks 16 as the most vaccinated state with 79.5 percent of residents having received at least one dose of a vaccination. And, 72 percent are fully vaccinated. For the age group of 18 to 49, 78 percent are fully vaccinated, and 10 percent are partially vaccinated.

For the fall semester, which begins August 22, the colleges are offering courses in person, in a hybrid format or fully online. If you have applied but not enrolled in courses, I encourage you to be the architect of your future. Staff is onsite willing to assist in your journey, whether it be degree completion or a career in a technical field. Also, free Extended Learning courses are available this fall. This is a great way to prepare for future college courses or career exploration.

The Board also directed District leadership to reinstate the policy of mandatory masking while indoors at District and college facilities. Additionally, outdoor masking requirements may apply if an outbreak should occur or if directed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, or the Riverside County Department of Public Health.

Personal protection equipment will remain available on campus. Also, facilities will be regularly cleaned and sanitized. Students are encouraged to continue to follow CDC’s guidelines — on and off campus — in order to prevent the spread of germs with regular hand washing and covering your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.

Finally, the Cleared4 system that the District has been using to track vaccinations and test results will be retired, but the required reporting of a positive COVID-19 result will continue. A student testing positive will self-report through their respective home college Health Services office. Reporting forms will be available on the Safe Return webpage. Reporting of positive COVID-19 cases remains essential so that the county can continue tracking positive cases. The colleges will also continue to offer vaccination and testing opportunities. Check your home college website for dates and times.

I wish you a safe and encouraging fall semester.

Sincerely,

Wolde-Ab Isaac, Ph.D.
