The memory of Erik William Eriz Jr., a beloved individual who touched the lives of
those around him, is set to be honored through the establishment of the Erik William
Eriz Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund at Norco College. Despite his own battles with
mental health, Erik was known for his love of family, friends, and his passion for
dance and music.
Erik was born in 1994 and passed away on January 18, 2018. His infectious laughter,
beautiful singing voice, and love for music left an imprint that will be forever cherished.
His journey was marked by his resilience in the face of developmental challenges and
mental health struggles. A member of the LGBTQ+ community, Erik navigated the path
to self-acceptance, all while sharing his culinary talents, innate musical abilities,
and an unforgettable smile that could light up any room.
In an effort to honor Erik's legacy and his profound connection to music, the Cyndi
Gundersen family has established the Erik William Eriz Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund
for $5k.
Cyndi Gundersen, a retired RCCD employee, and a Norco College Alum shares a deep personal
connection to Norco College, where she once walked talking to her son, embracing the
moments they shared. Her desire to support the Music program by investing in the aspirations
of students who harbor a passion for music aligns perfectly with Erik's own love for
the art form.
Erik's mother, Cyndi Gundersen, expressed her hope that the scholarship fund will
serve as a beacon of hope for individuals grappling with mental health challenges,
issues of identity, and thoughts of despair. She emphasizes the importance of students
seeking help and finding strength in the face of adversity. Through the Erik William
Memorial Scholarship Fund, Cyndi aspires to empower recipients to embrace life fully
and flourish, perpetuating the spirit of her beloved son.
Norco College President Monica Green shared a sense of gratitude and empathy for Erik
and his family. “Establishing this scholarship fund not only helps current Norco College
music students but helps remember and keep Erik’s spirit alive,” stated Green.
The RCCD Foundation and Norco College extend their heartfelt gratitude for the establishment
of the Erik William Memorial Scholarship Fund. This generous contribution will play
a pivotal role in nurturing the aspirations of Norco College Music Program students,
allowing them to pursue their dreams and make a lasting impact in the world of music.
