Norco College is excited to invite students, staff, and the community to join in celebrating the Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. The Moon Festival is a culturally significant holiday in Chinese tradition, symbolizing family reunion, the celebration of the harvest, and the enjoyment of the autumn moon at its fullest.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, is the second most important holiday in Chinese culture, following the Lunar New Year. Families come together to appreciate the full moon, believed to symbolize unity, and enjoy traditional moon cakes, tea, and other festive foods. The festival is a time to reflect on the harvest season, share stories, and enjoy cultural traditions passed down through generations.
At Norco College, we are committed to fostering a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and traditions. Our Moon Festival event will include various activities such as moon cake tastings, tea ceremonies, storytelling, and informative presentations on the significance of the lunar calendar and the ancient Chinese agricultural practices rooted in the 24 solar terms.
The 24 solar terms, which have guided Chinese agricultural life for over 3,000 years, were developed by ancient Chinese based on their observations of the sun's annual movement and its impact on the seasons. These solar terms played a crucial role in shaping Chinese agricultural practices, and their influence is still felt in modern-day life. They range from the Spring Equinox to the Winter Solstice, marking key points in the agricultural calendar that helped ancient people prepare for seasonal changes.
