Honoring Filipino American Contributions and Addressing Critical Conversations with Dr. Dylan Rodriguez

Norco College is proud to celebrate Filipino American History Month this October, recognizing the vital contributions and rich history of the Filipino American community. As part of the national commemoration, Norco College is hosting a series of events that honor the Filipino American experience and promote dialogue about the community’s historical and ongoing struggles in the United States.

To kick off the month’s events, the AANHPI (Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander) Student Achievement Program Advisory Council will host a keynote presentation today, October 1, 2024, from 12:50 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. in a special event that is open to all members of the campus community.

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Dylan Rodriguez

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Dylan Rodriguez, a professor from the University of California, Riverside (UCR), where he works in the Department of Media and Cultural Studies. Dr. Rodriguez is a renowned scholar whose work critically examines U.S. state violence and its impact on communities of color, with a focus on the experiences of Filipino Americans and other marginalized groups. In his keynote talk, titled "How U.S. State Violence Creates 'Filipino America,'" Dr. Rodriguez will explore the historical and contemporary implications of state-sponsored violence on the Filipino American community, shedding light on the complex dynamics that have shaped Filipino American identity. His talk will not only focus on history but will also connect to broader issues of racial justice, human rights, and resistance.
