2024 SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
NSF REU: Applying Data Science on Energy-efficient Cluster Systems and Applications
Location: California State University, Northridge
REU Dates: June 3, 2024 - July 26, 2024
Application Deadline: March 17, 2024
Learn more HERE
Students selected for the REU Program will receive a stipend of $700/week for the 8-week period and subsistence allowance including boarding and meals.
This is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). The goals of this program include increasing the participation of undergraduate students, especially from groups that are underrepresented in computing, in research on data science and energy-efficient computing; and applying data science to build energy-efficient cluster systems and applications. It will provide opportunities for undergraduate students to conduct research during an 8-week summer program.
REU Site objectives:
- Students will develop skills in intelligent data collection, data processing, and data visualization of geospatial data and maps;
- Students will gain expertise in applying data science technologies and methods to model the energy consumption of cluster systems and automobile air conditioning systems;
- Students will study parallel and distributed computing knowledge and investigate solutions to reduce the energy cost of cluster systems and applications.
Our REU Site will provide undergraduate students with an immersive experience in which they will participate in training and research activities to apply knowledge and skills of data science and parallel and distributed computing on energy-efficient cluster systems and applications. Students will gain research experience in problem-solving through analyzing existing research, designing and conducting experiments, and applying data science technologies in data collection, analysis, processing, and modeling. The faculty mentors in this program have exceptional expertise in data science and parallel and distributed computing, with extensive experiences in mentoring undergraduate student research. A series of training sessions will be provided at the beginning of the program to onboard students, introducing the working environment, the context of the research, and technical skills needed for projects in the program.
ELIGIBILTY REQUIREMENTS
- Must be enrolled in an undergraduate institution with at least one year remaining before graduation after finishing the research;
- Must be enrolled in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering or other related majors;
- Must have 3.0 or higher GPA;
- Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident of the United States.
UCLA PREP Program
PREP is a 6-week intensive summer program that provides pre-med students with the means to strengthen their ability and readiness to study medicine. Full participation in PREP will enhance student’s chances of being accepted into medical school and succeeding once there.
PREP prepares students through academic enrichment, personal development, MCAT review sessions, longitudinal applications support, focus on health disparities, interview skills and practice, and longitudinal mentorship.
- Open to rising juniors (students transferring to a university this fall)
- 40 students accepted each summer (30 from any school and 10 spots saved for students from Cal Poly Humboldt, Cal State San Bernardino, and UC Riverside)
- The first week is virtual; the last 5 weeks in-person at UCLA. This is a full-time commitment. Students will not be able to work.
- Travel stipends and/or room & board to stay in a dorm, as well as dining meal plan are provided.
- NO application fee. March 1st application deadline. Min 2.8 GPA required. NO letters of recommendation required. More eligibility requirements listed on website. For UCLA PREP questions contact UCLAPrep@mednet.ucla.edu
