Tips to Support Students in Distress
Listen. Validate. Connect. A simple way to support a student in distress is to provide a safe space for them
to share their concerns, then validate the feelings, fears or worry that you hear
(e.g. “that sounds really difficult"). If possible, connect the student with additional
resources to meet their specific needs- whether that be friends, family, specific
staff, special programs, resources, or counseling. Follow up to check in on the student
if you are able or plan for a colleague to follow up. If you would like to consult
with a mental health counselor about how to best support or respond to your students
in need, please give us a call at 951-738-7203 or email us at studenthealth.norcocollege.edu.
