On Saturday, October 5th, Norco College hosted its inaugural MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) Student Success Day, aimed at inspiring students to pursue successful careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields. The event provided an opportunity for students to connect with alumni, explore career pathways, and engage in hands-on learning experiences.
The day kicked off with a team-building challenge at Skull Canyon in Corona, where students conquered their fear of heights on a three-level ropes and catwalk course. Four adventurous MESA students also took on the zip line, adding excitement to the day.
Following the outdoor activities, students returned to Norco College for lunch and an engaging panel with six distinguished MESA alumni. The alumni shared their educational and professional experiences, motivating current students with stories of determination and success in STEM-related careers.
In the afternoon, students participated in a Career and Transfer Advising workshop led by Dr. Brittnee Quintanar. The event concluded with a fun STEM Challenge. Teams of students designed and built race cars from water bottles and basic materials, competing to see which creation could travel the farthest. Congratulations to the winning team: Ricardo Vera, Muzammil Afzal, and Ethan Lumahan!
Thanks to the leadership of MESA Coordinator Patricia Gill, the event was a powerful combination of learning, inspiration, and hands-on experience, leaving students motivated to pursue their own future success in STEM.
The MESA program at Norco College provides academic support, leadership development, and industry exposure to educationally disadvantaged students majoring in math, engineering, and science fields. It continues to play a vital role in advancing diversity and achievement in STEM disciplines at the College.
