Hispanic Heritage Month Faculty presenter—Andres Elizalde, Associate Professor, English
Presentation Title: Various perspectives on Hispanic, Latino and alternative ethnic terms.
"I'm a product of the California Community College system. As a first-generation college
student and immigrant, my educational journey has been both challenging and rewarding.
I immigrated to the US as a teenager from the border city of Tijuana, Mexico. Before
taking on my role as a college student and much later, college faculty, I had to inhabit
the lower rungs of the unskilled working world and assimilate the harsh prospects
of a life as an undocumented immigrant. My story is not unlike that of millions of
immigrants who seek to realize their life goals despite facing adverse circumstances.
I’m proud to be working at an institution that offers a second chance to those not
yet positioned to realize the best in themselves. The California Community College
system represents the best ideal that American society can offer the world."
