From November 6–8, ten Norco College SSS-STEM (Student Support Services - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) students, accompanied by Student Success Coach Dallas Carter and SSS Counselor Brittnee Quintanar, Ph.D., attended the 36th Annual Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) Conference in Dallas, Texas. This event connected students with professionals from top STEM organizations, providing insight into career paths and valuable networking opportunities.

TRiO Student Support Services, a federally funded program at Norco College, supports first-generation and income-eligible students in their academic and career development. This program was instrumental in preparing students for the GMiS Conference, which aligns with Norco College’s 2030 Educational Master Plan by offering professional development opportunities focused on equity and Guided Pathways. STEM fields are essential to the nation’s future, and events like GMiS equip underrepresented students with the tools, mentorship, and connections needed to succeed in these high-demand careers.

At the conference, students engaged with recruiters and professionals from leading organizations, including Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, the FBI, CIA, NSA, NASA, and the Department of Defense. These interactions allowed students to receive feedback on their resumes, practice networking skills, and explore potential internship opportunities for summer 2025.

The 2024 GMiS Conference, themed “Answering the Call,” emphasized expanding access to STEM education and careers, particularly for underserved communities. Norco College’s participation in this event reinforces its commitment to equipping students with experiences that prepare them for success in the global workforce.

In addition to professional development, the trip introduced students to Texas culture, including a visit to the Fort Worth Stockyards Cowtown Colosseum for a Texas rodeo. This experience was a fun way to celebrate National STEM Day and First Gen Day on November 8, boosting students' pride in their academic achievements.

The GMiS Conference represents a meaningful step in expanding STEM opportunities, and Norco College’s involvement supports the broader effort to advance STEM education and career development. By providing students with access to such experiences, Norco College is helping them make significant strides toward success in STEM and beyond.
