Nathaniel Ilo's journey is not just one of academic achievement; it is a profound testament to resilience, hope, and the transformative power of education. Born and raised in the vibrant but challenging neighborhoods of the Bronx, N.Y., Nathaniel faced adversity from an early age. Yet, it was in the heart of those struggles that he discovered the strength within himself to pursue a brighter future.

Nathaniel’s path to Norco College began with a burning desire for change. “Growing up, I saw the limitations that my environment placed on my dreams,” he recalls. “But I always believed there was something more out there for me.” This belief led him to make the courageous decision to leave his hometown during his 10th grade year and embark on a new adventure in Eastvale, Calif., a community that promised hope and new beginnings.

Upon arriving at Norco College, Nathaniel was met with a sense of belonging that he had never experienced before. The supportive faculty and vibrant student community embraced him as he began to navigate the challenges of college life. “Norco was more than just a school to me; it became my second home,” Nathaniel explained. “I found mentors who believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself.”

His time at Norco College was marked by growth and self-discovery. Majoring in psychology, Nathaniel immersed himself in his studies, driven by a passion for understanding the human experience. He participated actively in the Umoja program, where he connected with peers who shared similar backgrounds and aspirations. “We uplifted one another, celebrating our victories and supporting each other through challenges. It was a community built on love and shared dreams,” he reminisced.

However, Nathaniel faced moments of doubt and isolation along the way once he transferred to a four year college. “There were times when the lack of community made me want to turn back,” he admitted, reflecting on the challenges he encountered early in his college experience. “I felt lost and alone, wondering if I truly belonged. But in those moments, I remembered why I started. I wanted to honor my family's sacrifices and pave a new path for myself. I also called my mentor from Norco College where she reminded me that I was in a new space to create space for people like me.” Nathaniel co-founded the Nigerian Student Association at University California Santa Barbara(UCSB), aiming to create a supportive community for students of African descent. He also played a key role in reactivating the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Mu Kappa Chapter at UCSB, which was dormant for five years before he got there. It helped further enhance the representation and unity of underrepresented groups on the UCSB campus.

After successfully earning his degree from Norco College, Nathaniel took another leap of faith and transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). There, he continued to excel academically and personally, finding his passion for education and a calling to support others in their academic journeys. “Every step I took was a reminder that my dreams were valid,” he said, with gratitude.

Now, as he embarks on a master's program in education at the University of Southern California (USC), Nathaniel is driven by a deep desire to make a difference. His name, Nathaniel, means “gift from God,” and he embraces this meaning by dedicating his life to uplifting others. In his current role as an admissions counselor, Nathaniel strives to empower prospective students, guiding them through the college application process and helping them realize their potential. “I want to create opportunities for students who feel lost or unseen. I know what it’s like to feel that way, and I want to help others find their voice and their path,” he explained passionately.

As he looks to the future, Nathaniel harbors a dream of one day becoming the president of a university. “I want to be in a position where I can influence educational policies and create inclusive environments for all students,” he shared with determination. “I believe that with the right support, every student can achieve their dreams, just as I have.”

Nathaniel understands the challenges of pursuing a passion for education, coming from immigrant parents who initially struggled to support his choice of major. He faced the difficult reality of balancing his aspirations with the expectations of his family, but over time, they have come to see why his path was essential for his personal growth and fulfillment, ultimately transforming that struggle into motivation for his academic success.

To Nathaniel, education is not just about earning a degree; it is about transformation. “It’s about finding your purpose and lifting others as you rise. I hope to inspire future generations of students, especially those from underrepresented communities, to believe in their potential and pursue their dreams relentlessly,” he stated with conviction.

Nathaniel Ilo’s journey from the Bronx to Eastvale is a powerful reminder of the impact of community, education, and the human spirit. As he continues to chase his dreams, he remains committed to uplifting others, proving that no dream is too big and no journey too challenging when fueled by passion and determination.
