A solar kiosk to assist the campus community in charging one of the most used devices
of all time, smartphones, came to fruition on September 23. Judges and attendees had
the opportunity to view Solstice and Solar Mustang for their debut at the Norco College
Third Annual Engineering Challenge.
Two teams comprised of Norco College students, including two concurrently enrolled students had one-year and a little over $1k to make their projects a reality.
Team Solstice, the creators of Solstice, consisted of five team members: Hitha Antony, Nervana Nawwar, Chris Antony, Joe Vattamattam, and Bhavya Anand. Solstice, an ADA solar charging bench, allows users to charge several devices from 50%-100% in 30 minutes while sitting or standing, and incorporates LED lights around the base for nighttime use. When asked how the team felt about the project, team member Chris stated, "Pure unique joy when your engineering projects work." His sister and team leader, Hitha, shared, "We got through this because we had each other."
Team CANDo, the creators of Solar Mustang, consisted of five team members: Dustin Duke, Carlos Rios, Alexander Tucker, Nathan Co, and Gurjot Singh. Solar Mustang, a locker-style charging station, allows users to securely charge their phones in a locked cubby space and return later to retrieve. Each cubby is equipped with a combination lock, backup master key, and can hold the weight of an adult. Solar Mustang's internal led system enables students to have an easy night experience. Team leader Dustin noted, “I think it is wonderful because it gives us a chance to see a proposal we write come to fruition,” when discussing their overall experience and importance of building a team.
Viewing the solar projects was followed up with team presentations, q and a, judging, an awards ceremony, and a reception. Anticipation filled the room as judges tallied the scores. The conclusion... Team Solstice, with the win. Each winner received an iPad and each participant a certificate of recognition.
RCCD Chancellor Isaac, a judge for the event, concluded with these remarks, “From my perspective, both teams are winners. You did an amazing job. Not only have you learned, but you have educated us.”
The Third Annual Engineering Challenge was funded and sponsored by the Engineering Pathways Grant. Norco College would like to thank the student teams, the judges, and the STEM coordinator responsible for pulling this together, Patricia Gill.
