The Norco College Esports Association brought competitive gaming to campus on Sept. 17 with Smashdown at Smashtown, the first of several large-scale esports tournaments planned and organized by student leaders.
The tournament welcomed more than 45 competitors from across Southern California, including one of the region’s top-ranked players, who visited Norco College to compete and connect with the campus community. The event gave more students and visitors a chance to experience the college’s growing esports program.
Beyond the competition, Smashdown at Smashtown gave students hands-on, work-based learning experience across a range of professional roles. Students developed marketing materials, managed broadcast equipment, operated cameras and lighting, coordinated tournament logistics, and provided live shoutcasting throughout the event.
The tournament also raised funds for the Esports Association. Proceeds supported a $240 prize pool for the top eight finalists and provided funding for future association activities and events.
Following positive feedback from competitors and attendees, Esports Association student leaders look forward to building on the tournament's success. With plans to use the funds raised to support future programming, students hope to establish Smashdown at Smashtown as a monthly esports event on campus.

The event demonstrated the opportunities available through Norco College Esports, giving students the chance to develop technical, creative, organizational, and communication skills while putting their interests into action.
