Norco College has received $4.1 million in federally funded Upward Bound program grants, which includes two renewed multi-year grants and one new five-year grant.
The College received notification letters this week from Congressman Ken Calvert. Upward Bound initiatives are part of the federal TRIO Program which funds outreach and student services programs designed to reach disadvantaged populations.
“Upward Bound programs target underserved, low-income and at-risk youth at local high schools,” said Gustavo Oceguera, Associate Dean of Grants & College Support Programs at Norco College. “Many of these students will be the first in their families to attend college.”
Certain skills will help motivate program participants to complete secondary education and move on to success in post-secondary education, Oceguera said. Upward Bound program staff provides that support through such services as tutoring, academic counseling, study preparation, financial aid counseling and application assistance, along with education in math, science, foreign language, composition and literature.
Since 2003, the programs have served over 180 high school students from Corona Norco Unified School Districts.
